Collection: The Aunty Collection
The inspiration and story behind the Aunty Collection
“I first thought of altering famous paintings when I saw the painting, Possession Island, 1991 by the late Aboriginal Artist, Gordon Bennett. I was inspired and intrigued by the way he depicted a Young Aboriginal servant as the focal point of the colonial painting. (I first saw this back when I was 18 and it still has an impact on me now at 24)🙌🏽
Studying my Bachelor of Creative Art I was often tasked with researching LOTS of artists and to put it simply I was disappointed at the lack of Blak representation in Mainstream Contemporary Art and Historical Art. I grew up off Country and was never taught how to paint the traditional Aboriginal way so I was kind of in this limbo as a young blak artist.
I have always had a strong interest in social justice (as do most Blakfullas 💪🏽) so much so that I worked as a Paralegal and Family Violence Practitioner for 3 years supporting Blak women.
I guess my goal for this collection is that some day a young Blak artist stumbles across it and gets inspired✨“
